From My Build Your Dream Network: Cookbook Author, Katie Workman
This is the second in a series of mentorship stories I’m sharing this year. Mentors in my network who have helped me. And not only am I sharing takeaways that hopefully will be useful in your endeavors, as these mentors are also authors, I’m randomly giving away copies of their book (so read on!).
Cookbook author Katie Workman and I used to be neighbors. One floor apart, I’d get the call to come down when she was testing out new recipes. Between that, a wonderful family including beloved dog Cooper, she was pretty much, hands down, the best person to befriend in the building. WHY did I move out of that neighborhood???
Katie’s career has been in publishing — editor, publisher, author — so who better to turn to with the question “HOW did this whole publishing thing work?”. Over lunch and sushi, Katie explained how the industry works.
Knowing what you’re stepping into is often half the battle to succeeding. Knowledge is power, and a gut check: do you have the stamina and wherewithal to pursue whatever it is you’re interested in pursuing? Katie didn’t sugarcoat her answers. After talking with her, I had a clear picture of what I was getting myself into.
And I must say, there is nothing like having a friend and mentor you can ask all the “stupid” questions to.
NOW FOR THE GIVEAWAY!
Ready to participate in the second #mynetworktoyou #BYDN giveaway?
I will personally be sending to one randomly selected winner a copy of Katie’s cookbook DINNER SOLVED together with a copy of BUILD YOUR DREAM NETWORK.
How can you get your hands on this #mynetworktoyou #BYDN giveaway?
Some of the best connections happen around the dining room or kitchen table (or restaurant equivalent). As #BYDN readers know, that is how venture capitalist Evan Nisselson has build the LDV network of entrepreneurs and investors — a monthly gathering of people, a meal at time. Tell me your best connecting around the table story. It could be someone you met for coffee or grabbed breakfast with or the dinner guest you were seated next to or the college pal you met in the cafeteria lineup.
Respond to this Medium post with your answer (or contact me via my website or hit me up on Twitter @jkhoey or Instagram @jkellyhoey if you prefer). If you share your answer on social media, be sure to tag the person who helped you and use the hashtags #BYDN #mynetworktoyou.
Can’t wait for your responses (bonus entries for describing what you ate!).
Cheers,
K.
p.s. Next up from my #BYDN mentor network…novelist, Aidan Donnelly Rowley, followed by author, speaker and founder of the Good Life Project, Jonathan Fields.
